Why Should You Have an Emergency Kit?

A checklist might seem like a lot of work to put together, especially once you start getting everything together, but an emergency kit list and emergency kit are so important to have ready for if a natural disaster like a forest fire or hurricane hits.

There are four main important things to consider when it comes to what you need taken care of in an emergency: food, shelter, water, and sanitation. Let’s take a closer look at that!

4 Essential Elements of a Emergency Preparedness and How They Fit in your Safety Kit

Food

Food is something we all need to live, so obviously it’s a big part of our emergency go bag. When we’re looking at what food to put in our safety kit, we want things that are lightweight and hearty – so no canned goods for this one! Think things like beef jerky, peanuts, granola bars – things you would take hiking.

Shelter

When it comes to shelter, we’re not necessarily talking about a house, moreso things to keep our bodies safe and warm. These are things like sleeping bags, coats, a tarp to string up if it’s raining – all things that protect our bodies from the elements. Other shelter items needed for emergency preparedness that are super common are tents, which is what we might be thinking of already.

Water

Water is the key to life, so of course, it has to make its way into your family survival kit. Our emergency preparedness expert Daniel Kilburn reminded us in our UM Club Episode going into detail about Emergency Preparedness that it’s best to bring some kind of water filtration like a Lifestraw or tablets instead of trying to lug around all that heavy water!

Sanitation

Sanitation is definitely the thing in emergency situations that none of us want to talk about, but it’s SO important in keeping us healthy and safe. Making sure that you have the proper hygiene equipment like hand sanitizer is great, but we also have to remember to take care of business far away from any water we might be using, and make sure we’re all keeping as clean as we can!

Emergency Kit Template

We want everyone to be as safe as they can in the case of an emergency, so we’ve included a FREE Emergency Kit Checklist that you can use! This list was created by our emergency expert Daniel Kilburn from Emergency Action Planning, and he’s helping us to create what he calls a bug out bag (or BOB for short)!

This kit is designed to last for 72 hours and to be used in case of emergencies – if you need to evacuate, travel a longer distance, or take shelter elsewhere, you can keep BOB with you to help! This checklist covers a lot, but if you have access to everything on it we definitely recommend getting it all. You never know what you’ll need in an emergency, but an emergency kit will definitely help for whatever you may face!
